nubbsgalorephotos by gerry ellis from the david sheldrick wildlife trust, a nursery and orphanage for elephants in kenya’s tsavo east national park. here, fifty five keepers are charged with being around the clock parents to an elephant. the elephants, however, are the ones who chose their caretakers; it is the keepers who must ingratiate themselves to the elephants and earn their trust.

when elephants first arrive at the orphanage they are often traumatized from having witnessed the slaughter of their mothers and family by poachers. grieving can last several months, and they often lose the will to live. but as dame daphne sheldrick, founder of the orphanage, explains, a caretaker is charged with “persuading an elephant to live when it wants to die.”

approximately 35,000 elephants are killed by humans every year. with an estimated 350,000 elephants left in the whole continent of africa, they will be gone in the wild within ten years.

cbc’s the nature of things did a program on the elephants and their caretakers. you can foster an elephant with the david sheldrick wildlife trust online here. for more on the emotional lives of elephants, as well as the david sheldrick wildlife trust and other human efforts to save them, check out these posts

UGH I HATE THIS LINE. It’s like the writers couldn’t think of smart scientists who Steve would recognize that are still in popular knowledge. How about … I dunno… ALBERT EINSTEIN????

Sorry, I hate it when they go for the cheap/lazy joke.

Plus, even if you don’t get a cultural reference, you can figure a lot out from context. Hmm… what’s the opposite of a hulk? Someone mild-mannered, and sophisticated either culturally, intellectually, or politically. So Stephen Hawking can either be like Hemingway, Einstein, or FDR. And since we’re putting together a team to fight Loki, probably not FDR or Hemingway. Can we please remember that Steve is really good at deduction and logic?

So how about:
Coulson: “When he’s not that thing, though, the guy’s like a Stephen Hawking.”
Steve: ::look::
Coulson: “um… he’s like…”
Steve: “Albert Einstein?”
Coulson: “Yeah, a smart person.”

oh, that IS better!

Comics are best when enjoyed with imagination.

Look, it’s super sweet that Cameron took the time to draw these images, but honestly….did you think he wasn’t thinking about movement and ergonomics when he drew it initially?

I know you dipshits want to add your two cents, but Batgirl isn’t real. If I KNEW Batgirl in real life, I’d be talking her out of going on patrol and possibly getting in harm’s way over her fashion choices.

She’s a drawing. She can do whatever we want her to do just by drawing it. Stop dragging reality into your fantasy outlets. Just enjoy yourselves a bit….

And Joel Carroll nails it! Thank you so much dude. It’s nice if a fictional story has a hint of reality in it but don’t let reality intrude in you having fun over fantasy. If not, we won’t have superheroes or science fiction or dragons or elves and stuff.

Thor character models!

Did these as I was starting work on the book.  The costumes were designed before I came on board (by the great Esad Ribic, I believe), but here’s my take on them.
